Enrollment Status:
Students must take a minimum of 12 hours to be considered full-time students. Please note that students taking less than 12 hours (not full-time) may be in jeopardy of:

• losing insurance coverage under parent/guardian's insurance policy
• being out of compliance with the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services if enrolled on a student visa
• being placed on a loan repayment schedule by a lender or guarantor if student is the recipient of Federal financial aid
• losing a scholarship or financial aid if the guidelines for receiving it require full-time enrollment

Maximum Registration Hours:
Students are allowed to register for up to 17 hours during preregistration and up to 19 hours during open registration. To go over 19 hours, you must contact your advisor for further approval and have a GPA over 3.0. It is also important to note that Texas A&M will charge tuition at the non-resident rate to all students who exceed their program's semester credit hour limit (click here for more information).

Classification by Hours:
It is important to note that registration is based on earned hours at the time registration assignments are made. Students with a change in classification after assignments are made can contact registration@tamu.edu to request an updated time assignment (must be before the start of the updated time).

Freshman : 0-29 hours
Sophomore : 30-59 hours
Junior : 60-89 hours
Senior : 90+ hours

Course Reference Number (CRN):
Because each section has a unique CRN, CRNs are useful when you need to quickly access the course. If you are interested in a specific course, you should write down its CRN in case you need to quickly register for that course.

Course Numbers:
100-199 are primarily open to freshmen; 200-299 are primarily open to sophomores; 300-399, primarily open to juniors; and 400-499, primarily open to seniors.

Section Numbers:
Make sure to check the section number of your course in case you accidentally sign up for honors classes. Most sections will be in the 400s, 500s, and honors sections will be in the 200s.

You should check if you have enough time to make it to your classes in time. More than often you may have classes in far locations, so make sure to check if you have plenty of time to arrive to your next class on time while accounting for professors going over time or for days you have an exam. 

It is most helpful to ask students who have already taken the class you are interested in to determine whether it would be beneficial for you to choose a specific professor. It is also common to use other resources like published past syllabi to gather more information about your professor. Also note that Math professors are not revealed until a 1-2 weeks before the first day of class. 

Full Sections: 
When a class is full, you should always keep on eye on the class you want during your pre-registration time and open registration in case seats open up, which most often they do. Some departments will release a fixed number of seats throughout the registration period (often seen in science classes). There are also mobile applications available that will notify you once a section has a open seat.
It is also important to have backups in mind in case there are no open seats.

Force Requests:
Another option is to submit a force request to the advisor of the department teaching the class. Force request procedures will vary from department to department, and it does not guarantee enrollment in the course. For more information, look up specific force request requirements and procedures for the department.

Overrides:
In some cases, students may be able to request an override to the department teaching the class. Overrides can be for course restrictions on the student's area of study (major/minor), classification, or pre-requisite classes.
