December 2021 | College of ArchitectureWhat do you enjoy most about working with students?
I enjoy advising students. I have been working with students in various capacities at Texas A&M University for 29 years. I am like a proud parent seeing them come to Texas A&M as scared, excited young adults about to embark on one of the most important journeys in their lives. It’s an honor and privilege to be a small part in the student’s lives and to watch them grow and mature to become productive citizens reaching their personal and professional goals.

I love learning about my students. Identifying what their goals and passions are helps me be a better resource who can intentionally connect them to opportunities that will help them flourish. There is no better moment than having a student come back to my office to tell me all about an internship or high impact program that truly inspired them and has helped them decide on a career path.

What advice do you have for new academic advisors at Texas A&M?
You are not alone! Ask questions and be ready for anything. In many ways, academic advising is a “learn on the job” career. Taking the time to shadow another advisor and ask questions will help you feel more confident when you start advising students on your own.
