• Receive compensation of $500 for the semester. This will be paid as a stipend through your student Financial Aid Portal around the middle of the Fall semester. 
• Professional Development. As a Peer Mentor, you will be able to develop and apply leadership and communication skills that will be useful in your professional career.
• Expand your network. You will be able to create and establish relationships with students and current Texas A&M faculty and staff. The established connections will expose you to professional networks within the Aggie community.
• Give back. As a peer mentor, you will be an aide for first generation students. You will support the Gen1 Learning Community, build relationships with mentees, contribute to mentees' awareness of campus resources, and assist them to gain the skills needed to be successful on campus.   

• Co-facilitate a weekly 0-credit hour course with a Gen1 Instructor.
• Dedicate 5-7 hours a week preparing and planning for class and community events.
• Participate in summer training, fall and spring retreats, and the Gen1 Peer Mentor selection process.
• Host study halls in the Routh First-Generation Center throughout the academic year. 
• Must interact with mentees outside of the classroom for a minimum of 20 hours throughout the semester. 
• Utilize Navigate to log their mentee interactions and peer mentor meetings. 

• Maintain effective communication with the Gen1 Coordinator and assigned instructor 
• Assist Gen1 Instructors with general course questions 
• Establish a relationship with each assigned mentee 
• Maintain a professional demeanor in all Gen1 Learning Community and Routh First-Generation Center events and activities 
• Participate in Gen1 Learning Community or Routh First-Generation Center events throughout the semester

• Check-in with mentees before and after class
• Prepare and update course materials for each class 
• Ensure class is set up for each lesson
• Take attendance each week 
• Facilitate the 4 Hullabaloo U required lesson plans 
• Maintain an interactive classroom environment 

• Attend weekly meetings with the Gen1 Learning Community Coordinator and Gen1 Instructor 
• Meet with fellow peer mentor(s) weekly to prepare for class 
• Meet with each assigned mentee individually 
• Plan and implement social and academic opportunities for mentees 
• Attend professional developement opportunities provided by the Routh First-Generation Center 

To apply to become a Gen1 Peer Mentor students must: 

• Be enrolled as a full-time student at Texas A&M University
• Maintain at least a 2.0 GPR at the end of spring semester after submitting an application  
• Be able to fit a FYEX 101 course section in their schedule for the fall and spring semester
• Be able to complete at least one year of service 
• Be willing to enhance classroom facilitation and management skills 
• Be a resource to help transition first-year, first-generation student from high school to college 
• Be committed to advancing first-generation student success at Texas A&M University
