Canvas Community

After completing their first year, scholars will be enrolled in a Regents' Canvas Learning Community to begin tracking their progress toward HILE completion. Canvas will be used to document the completion of the required HILE modules such as the Intake and Verification Form, Reflections, and Skills Survey. This platform will be used as the main form of communication where the Routh First-Generation Staff will provide individualized grading and feedback for all scholars.

What Counts as a HILE?

Most HILE semester-long experiences should include approximately 80–100 hours.

Student Leadership Position

Make a difference on campus by taking on a leadership role in a student organization. Strengthen your communication, teamwork, organization, and decision-making skills while helping others and making your voice heard.

Internships / Co-Ops / Student Employment

Put what you learn in the classroom into practice through hands-on work experience. Explore career options, build professional skills, connect with employers, and gain experience that can help you prepare for life after graduation.

Service Learning, Community Based Learning

Connect your learning to real community needs through meaningful service and hands-on projects. Work with others to make a positive difference while developing teamwork, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Undergraduate Research

Explore questions, ideas, and topics that interest you. Work with a faculty mentor on research, scientific discoveries, creative projects, or real-world challenges while building critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Study Abroad

Experience a new culture, explore the world, and learn from people with different backgrounds and perspectives. Studying abroad can help you build independence, gain global awareness, and see the world in new ways.
