The required All-Instructor Symposium will take place on Tuesday, May 16, from 8:30 AM – 12:00 PM.

Designed for both new and returning instructors for Fall 2023, the All-Instructor Symposium serves as the cornerstone of the ongoing Hullabaloo U instructor development opportunities, community of practice, and recognition of excellence within the First Year Experience. Symposium will kick off with an Opening Session featuring a welcome from our administration, announcement of annual First Year Experience awards, and a keynote address from Dr. Sonja Ardoin, a national expert on student success. Two concurrent breakout sessions will follow the Opening Session.

Symposium Format

Both virtual and in-person attendance options are being offered for Symposium:

In-Person – MSC Bethancourt Ballroom (MSC 2300 A-C) - A light breakfast will be provided. Check-in and breakfast begin at 8:00 AM.
Virtual - live-streamed event in synchronous Zoom webinar format. Zoom links will be provided several days before the event.

Keynote

Setting a First-Gen Foundation: Preparing Our Classrooms and Curriculum to Welcome Learners Who are New to Higher Education Systems | Dr. Sonja Ardoin

This keynote session will invite participants to consider who first-generation college students are - nationally and locally, question our assumptions about this student population, and analyze how higher education institutions create barriers for them. We will consider how we, as instructors, construct curricula and learning environments and whether, or not, those constructions set a foundation for first-generation college students to succeed.

About Dr. Ardoin: Dr. Sonja Ardoin is a learner, educator, facilitator, and author. Proud of her rural hometown of Vidrine, Louisiana, her working-class, Cajun roots, and her first-generation college student to Ph.D. journey, Sonja holds degrees from LSU, Florida State, and NC State. She considers herself a scholar-practitioner of higher education; she served as an administrator for 10 years before shifting to the faculty in 2015. She currently serves as an associate professor of higher education and student affairs at Clemson University. Sonja studies social class identity, college access and success for rural and first-generation college students, student and women’s leadership, and career preparation and pathways in higher education and student affairs. Sonja stays engaged in the broader field through ACPA, AFLV, ASHE, the Center for First-generation Student Success, NASPA, and several journal editorial boards.

Concurrent Breakout Sessions

Following the Opening Session, there will be two concurrent breakout sessions, the majority of which will be led by returning Hullabaloo U instructors. Breakout sessions are designed to provide a forum for sharing ideas, best practices, and innovative approaches to enhance the Hullabaloo U experience.

In-Person presentations will be livestreamed for virtual participants.
All sessions will also be recorded and posted to this website after the event.

Setting a First-Gen. Foundation: Putting Concepts into Practice*

Abstract: Moving the keynote concepts from abstraction to application, this breakout session will offer a workshop opportunity for instructors to determine how to incorporate practices into their specific courses. Come to this session with your syllabus, course management system, and other materials and be prepared to individually and collectively reflect on, share ideas for, and plan the first-gen. foundation for your course.

The Great H.U. Baking Show

An interactive twist on the Time Management HU learning outcome, this presentation will have you engage hands-on with a Cooking Demonstration lesson plan--no mess involved. What We’ve Learned About the Impact of Hullabaloo U

One significant role that a Hullabaloo U instructor fills is being a conduit to services for students when they are in a time of need. One of the challenges with this role is removing communication hurdles and providing students a clear, safe communication path. Achieving Better Outcomes Using the Well-being Improvement Survey for Higher Education Settings

Learning Beyond the Lesson: A Conversation about Getting Creative

Responding to an articulated desire to learn more about Aggie traditions, we designed a lesson that extended learning from other lessons into an interactive exploration of Aggie traditions. We will be sharing how we used library resources available to all to create an opportunity for learning about the evolution of Aggie traditions and learn what worked and what we'd like to try next. We also invite the audience to reflect and share their success of lesson plan creativity, or start thinking beyond their lessons and get creative with us!

Teaching Freshmen About Food Insecurity

In this session, the focus will be on the problem of food insecurity experienced by college students, including the obstacles they face in obtaining affordable and nutritious food. A module example will be presented that Hullabaloo U instructors can incorporate into their courses that addresses food insecurity. The module aims to raise awareness of resources available on and off-campus, suggests simple and budget-friendly recipes suitable for dorm or apartment living, and encourages students to seek assistance when needed.
