Staff Member Honored at National Conference

ATLANTA, GA — February 2020 — Last week, the National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students (NISTS) honored several annual award winners during the opening session of the NISTS 2020 Annual Conference held at the Intercontinental Buckhead hotel in Atlanta.
 
Jason Mastrogiovanni, Executive Director of the Office for Student Success at Texas A&M University, was awarded a $2,000 NISTS Research Grant for his study titled, “Collaboration in Transfer Student Work: A Cultural Historical Activity Theory Study at Four-Year Institutions.”

Mastrogiovanni is a doctoral candidate in Learning, Design, and Technology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. His study coincides with his dissertation research, which explores how practitioners collaborate in transfer student work, particularly at four-year institutions. Mastrogiovanni plans to analyze interviews and documents from transfer professionals at two institutions using qualitative methods and an Activity Systems Analysis (ASA) framework. This approach will yield greater insight into the individual and social interactions of these collaborations and will help institutions better execute the transfer student experience.
 
Through the research grant award, NISTS encourages creative, scholarly work related to transfer. Proposals are judged based on a range of criteria, including relevance to the transfer field, filling a gap in the literature, and sound research design. Mastrogiovanni will present his findings at the NISTS 2021 annual conference in Portland, Oregon, next February.
